Mobile Creches was founded in Delhi by Mrs. Meera Mahadevan to provide safe and happy childhoods to the children of migrant construction workers

1972-1973

A branch of Mobile Creches established in Bombay and it became known as Mobile Creches Bombay

1975-1976

Beginning of grants from the Department of Social Welfare which later came to be known as the Central Social Welfare Board

1976-1977

  • Services extended to children living on slums
  • LokDoot (street play) groups set up to deliver important messages to community members

1977-1978

Founder of Mobile Creches, Mrs. Meera Mahadevan, passes away on July 22, 1977

An extension of Mobile Creches Bombay set up in Pune

First overnight camp organized for children to visit Vashi, New Bombay

Bal Palika Training course established to prepare women for a career in early childcare

A study 'In the Shadow of the Scaffolding' on the lives of migrant construction workers conducted in collaboration with SPARC, and with financial support from CRY

1986-1987

  • The Child-to-Child Program got a boost with a grant from the Aga Khan Foundation
  • 'Prakalp' - a monthly theme method for imparting education to the migrant children initiated

1988-1989

MMC's oldest centre in Powai that is still in operation today, was inaugurated

1991-1992

India Population Project V is started with support from the World Bank and Bombay Municipal Corporation. The goal of the project was to provide basic health coverage to community members.

1995-1996

India Population Project V concludes and has provided health coverage to over 17,000 people

1997-1998

Mobile Creches celebrates 25 years of its services

2002-2003

Moved offices to 1st Floor, Abbas Building, Mereweather Road, Colaba, Mumbai - 400001

2003-2004

Non-formal education program begins under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan of the Central Government with the goal being preparing children for municipal school enrolment

2006-2007

Started training women from the community, i.e. construction sites through the teacher training programme

2006-2007

Mumbai Mobile Creches registered as a separate identity (Section 25 Company) in Mumbai

2008-2009

  • Over 5500 children reached this year.
  • Class in Thane is nominated by local education department for "Best SSA class in Thane" Award
  • MMC rebrands with a new logo, website and communication materials
  • Collaboration with Integrated Child Development Services initiated

2009-2010

1st Annual Book Week celebrated to encourage reading and kindle imagination in the young minds

2010-2011

Right to Education Act comes in to force on 1st April 2010 and re-engages MMC in its mission to strengthen its education initiatives for children above 6 years

2012-2013

Care on Wheels - Mobile Bus is launched to reach children living on smaller construction sites that don't have an MMC daycare centre

2013-2014

The first Childcare Centre set up- in which the builder takes complete ownership of running the centre, while MMC monitors the quality of service delivery

2014-2015
